variations on a jingle
b and i were singing "rudolph the red-nosed reindeer" in the car the other day. unbeknownst to either of us, people sing DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THIS SONG. i had no idea.
so, i'm taking a survey! how did you fill in the parentheses when you sang this as a kid?
rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (reindeer!)
had a very shiny nose (like a lightbulb!)
and if you ever saw it (saw it!)
you would even say it glows (like a lightbulb!)
all of the other reindeer (reindeer!)
used to laugh and call him names (like dumbo!)
they never let poor rudolph (rudolph!)
join in any reindeer games (like football!)
then one foggy christmas eve
santa came to say (ho ho ho!)
"rudolph, with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
then all the reindeer loved him (loved him!)
as they shouted out with glee (yippee!)
rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (reindeer!)
you'll go down in history (like the indians*!)
*that would be the cleveland indians, lest anyone get all politically correct on me.

Uh... hello stranger. I have to say I haven't come to visit you in awhile. So I have lots of catching up to do! Now.. onto the Reindeer song. Yes, I will tell you how I echo it:
rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (reindeer!)
had a very shiny nose (like a lightbulb!)
and if you ever saw it (saw it!)
you would even say it glows (like a flashlight!)
all of the other reindeer (reindeer!)
used to laugh and call him names (like Pinocchio!)
they never let poor rudolph (rudolph!)
join in any reindeer games (like monopoly!)
then one foggy christmas eve
santa came to say (ho ho ho!)
"rudolph, with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
then all the reindeer loved him (loved him!)
as they shouted out with glee (yippee!)
rudolph the red-nosed reindeer (reindeer!)
you'll go down in history (like Colombus!)
Laura and I were singing this the other day and "join in any reindeer games (like football!)" turned into (like Monopoly!)
Agreed! I am so glad other people sang "Like Monopoly" because M was looking at me like I was crazy.
Also:
used to laugh and call him names (like pinnochio!)
you'll go down in history (like George Washington!)
paul - "turned into"? like, one of you was singing something else first?
The sjw version is nearly the same as yours, but:
all of the other reindeer (reindeer)
used to laugh and call him names (like pinocchio!)
they never let poor rudolph (rudolph!)
join in any reindeer games (like monolopy!)
and no echo after "you'll go down in history".
in my opinion, any reindeer that called rudolph 'dumbo' because of his nose should have had a hoof shoved up his ***. i don't get the connection. :-P
monopoly. i stand corrected.
like pinocchio, like monopoly, like columbus!
I also grew up singing "like Monopoly!" But our echo of "you'll go down in history" was "(on page forty-niiiiiiiine)", sung in a manner that would indicate there was a piano chord being trilled under it, like the finale of a big number.
oy. These never made sense to me, but in my elementary school it was
hoofball
I can't remember the name they called him, but I don't think it was dumbo
and we shouted out with glee like toothpaste. Don't ask, I have no idea.
And you'll go down in history like George Washington, followed by a second echo (DC). Again it makes no sense. I actually remember being mad because it made no sense.
Ah well.
we also did the "like george washington" at the end.
merry christmas!
pinocchio, monopoly & george washington.
and that was growing up in north dakota
aha! a canadian version... "like napoleon!"
fun post :D
I heard a bunch of screaming Aussies singing this at "Carols by Candlelight" a couple of weeks ago (since when is Rudolph a _carol_?????) I remember being a little baffled by what they chucked in the echoes, but I can't remember the details now.
My own Central Ohio recollection is:
light bulb, dumbo, football, and Columbus.
After overhearing some kids singing over the holiday season, I'm proud to update that they called him names like "fudge face," at least in south-west Ohio.
I'm in the 'like Pinocchio, like Monopoly, and like George Washington' group, and that's consistent from central Arkansas, east Texas, and west Ohio. Although I think some from all those states would throw in Columbus at times.
Love this. Three minor changes:
Names...(like Pinocchio) - which really makes no sense at all
Games... (like Monopoly)
History... (like Lincoln)
As an aside, I've decided that I don't like the whole concept of this story anyway, it's kind of mean spirited and prejudiced.
