recap

- lunch at lui lui courtesy of the boss. chicken jalfrezi? bailey's cheesecake? mmmmm.

- afternoon reverie punctuated by testing of the INCREDIBLY. LOUD. NEW. FIRE. ALARMS. the testing was apparently successful, as was complete liquefication of my brain.

- surprisingly/ironically/awesomely unrelated to the fire alarms, a car caught FIRE in the parking lot today. my boss walked by and said, "i guess there's a car on fire in the client parking lot, i have to go out and check on it." i waited for perhaps three seconds before, um, following him outside? duh? you tell me there's a car on fire outside and expect me to not RUN OUTSIDE IMMEDIATELY? the hood was entirely en fuego. kind of awesome [does that make me a pyro?]. fire truck came out and everything. also kind of awesome. and no one was hurt, so all in all awesomeness. um, except perhaps for the owner of the car. oops.

thing one and thing two

thing one: this post from meegs makes me laugh.

*swoon*

thing two: this article about st. nick from jason boyett at relevant also makes me laugh.

"It's complicated. Like Keith Richards, the Santa legend is ancient, murky, and fairly disturbing."

housekeeping

a couple of saturdays ago i finally decided to clean my apartment. i mean, i generally keep the place pretty clean [um, just don't look at my desk]. but this was serious; i was going to bust out the mop.

yeah. I KNOW.

i spent most of the day dusting and scrubbing and wiping and soaking. by the end of the evening, everything was pine-sol fresh and clean enough to expand the five-second rule by several minutes at least. i fell into bed feeling very productive.

the next day, i realized, was the first sunday of advent. there was no sermon per se [SOMEONE was in honduras... something about servanthood, whatever], but a guided time of reflection on waiting, on redemption. mostly i was struck by the sense of hope that this season of advent brings. the hope of new beginnings, the hope of cleansing, the hope of love and life and joy. the hope that the new will come and the old shall pass away.

something about it all compels me to reflect on my own state of affairs. now, i know sometimes people feel like they need to "clean up" before they have some sort of "come to Jesus" moment or something. which is not the sort of motivation i'm talking about here. i'm not talking about being driven by fear, or guilt, or embarrassment. i'm talking about being led by love, by thankfulness, by gratitude. kindness paves the way to repentance. redemption is bigger than fear. our lives are not our own, and that is a very good thing.

my apartment may be spotless, but there's always a little housecleaning to do.

"Why would you possibly think that anyone other [than] the Postal Service, UPS and FedEx would have the slightest use for your zip code? We aren't mailing the cab to you."

okay, so this is my new favorite website... the chronicles of a man answering phones for a taxicab company in virginia. hilarity.

still autumn

there's a serious lack of updateage going on here. i made it "home" and back again for thanksgiving / vacation, which covered everything from sleeping in every single day to running around the house making sure the nephews were not destroying things/others/themselves. really it was a mostly relaxing week and a nice break from the daily grind.

in lieu of any actual substance, i present a view of the street on which i grew up. just one block long, seven houses on each side, a modest neighborhood on the east side of town. if you squint you can see my car in the driveway on the right in the middle of the block. if you squint harder you can probably see my dad raking leaves. if you wish there weren't cars parked on the street to ruin the symmetry of the photograph, i'll have you know that i left five minutes after this picture was taken. don't complain.

it felt a little odd to be taking a picture of my street. sort of like... taking a picture of your sock drawer, or toothbrush, or something equally mundane that you see every day. i felt the same taking the picture in this post [which was taken on the other side of the brown building at the end of the street]. except that i don't see these things every day anymore.

as we turned the corner onto our little windblown late autumn street, i was momentarily surprised at the view. it's just my old street, but the bright yellow leaves scattered everywhere combined with the peaceful scene made me smile. it's a nice little neighborhood. nothing spectacular. but it will always be home.
