plagiarizing

no, this isn't about ou

since i can't seem to come up with anything on my own, i present two borrowed thoughts.

the first is an excerpt from friend and fellow squarespace blogger meegs. i always like reading her thoughts on God. the second is a prayer from 16th century explorer sir francis drake [thanks rachel].

If the only God I know doesn't threaten my way of thinking and behaving, I submit that I probably don't know the real God at all. If the God I know behaves in predictable ways, doing just what I want so long as I push all the right levers and buttons, then I probably don't know the real God at all. If the God I know seems to be reading to us from a book called 101 Ways to Improve Your Self-Esteem instead of the book called The Glory of the Lord Will Be Revealed, I probably don't know the real God at all.

I'm tired of only knowing the God that's defined by me, instead of knowing the me that's defined by God. We all want something bigger than ourselves. If all God really does is validate my ways and my wants, then all that's left is a very small, sad, me-centric existence. I want to know the God who threatens me, who challenges me, who is dangerous, who makes life unsafe. I'd rather know the real thing than live with a pale shadow.

Disturb us, Lord, when
we are too pleased with ourselves.
When our dreams have come true
because we dreamed too little.
When we arrived safely
because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
with the abundance of things we possess
we have lost our thirst
for the waters of life.
Having fallen in love with life,
we have ceased to dream of eternity.
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
we have allowed our vision
of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly.
To venture on wilder seas
where storms will show Your mastery.
Where losing sight of land,
we shall find the stars.

We ask you to push back
the horizons of our hopes;
and to push back the future
in strength, courage, hope, and love.

This we ask in the name of our Captain,
who is Jesus Christ.

i hit refresh on my webmail and suddenly got one of those generic non-domain domain pages, you know, the kind that have just a bunch of random links on them. it's been like this for twenty minutes.

i'm freaking out a little here.

summer storms

took a walk on the ridges with a friend this evening. she mentioned at one point that she had always wanted to get caught in a sudden rain while running... this was about ten minutes before we heard a thunder roll. predictably, it began raining shortly after we had turned around from our farthest point, and our walk quickly turned into a run. we couldn't run back the whole way, so we finally gave up, slowed down, and enjoyed the refreshing turn of events.

my clothes are STILL hanging up, slightly damp. but it has turned out to be a lovely, relaxed evening, and a good time drying out.
