drippage

so the drainage situation in paul's neck of the woods has expanded to a leakage situation in my own. i was almost out the door this morning when i took one last glance and thought, now that looks odd. the east wall of my living room was having some sort of issue that was unclear to me at that point. in the dreary rainy early morning light, i realized that right where the ceiling adjoins the top of the wall, the paint was sagging down in a nice little reverse bunting effect [the flag, not the bird]. and there were definitely some faint drippage marks, rolling down the wall.

it finally clicked in my pre-caffeinated brain that THIS is the noise i had been hearing at four or five in the morning. i had assumed the chinese water torture was happening elsewhere; against the siding or down an eavespout or by the window, or, you know, at the very least, SOMEWHERE OUTSIDE.

all that being said, it doesn't seem to be too serious... yet. no gushing water, no puddles on the carpet, no floodwaters. called the landlord, he called back, i imagine he'll show up sometime soon [they're good like that].

meanwhile, i wait. i've been doing a lot of waiting lately...

update: still waiting. no floods, no landlords. i sopped up the puddle forming in the droopy paint bunting. documentation of this annoying non-catastrophe starts here if you are really that bored.

quaint

since kt was not available to entertain me by phone on my drive back from lunch, i was forced to listen to the radio. i don't do this very often. is it some sort of rule that you can only play 70's and 80's music during the workday? here is the short playlist endured from kfc to west green, which i am sharing so that they may become lodged in your head as well as mine.

come on, eileen - dexy's midnight runners
[i'm fairly certain that aside from the title line, none of this song is in english, or any other documented language for that matter]

sunglasses at night - corey hart
[google the lyrics to this one and then try to convince me this guy wasn't on drugs during the writing process]

stayin' alive - bee gees
[if women can sing below you in four-part harmony, something is terribly wrong]

well, at least it's not mahna mahna...

locking in

i received a generic newsletter from my insurance company the other day. you know, tips on retirement strategies and fund investments and life insurance, crap like that. also included was a section on saving for your kid's higher education. and though i have no children of my own nor am i anywhere near having children of my own, i am a thorough kind of gal so i read through it over my cereal the other morning. okay, okay, take advantage of compounding interest, 529 plans, your run-of-the-mill sort of stuff. and then i got to point #4:

Look into prepaid tuition plans.

Many colleges and universities now allow you to start paying tuition years before your child is admitted, essentially "locking in" tuition at current rates. This is a particularly good idea if your heart is set on sending your child to your alma mater.

are you kidding me with this?

trust me, i understand that having your parents send you, or even help send you, to college, is not something to be taken for granted [thanks, mom and dad!]. but seriously? "if your heart is set on sending your child to your alma mater"?

i am appalled. i can't possibly think of a better way to cause your kid to happily attend your alma mater's rival school.
