spreading the love

the dw love, that is.

a new law [from mockingbird, 2005]

don’t teach me about politics and government
just tell me who to vote for

don’t teach me about truth and beauty
just label my music

don’t teach me how to live like a free man
just give me a new law

[pre-chorus]
i don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to me

[chorus]
i want a new law
i want a new law
just gimme that new law

don't teach me about moderation and liberty
i prefer a shot of grape juice

don’t teach me about loving my enemies...

don’t teach me how to listen to the Spirit
just give me a new law

[pre-chorus/chorus]

[bridge]
what’s the use in trading a law you can never keep
for one you can that cannot get you anything
do not be afraid...

oh, how we tend to wish [force] everything to black and white... life might be easier, but at what cost?

Not me. The shades of gray are messier sometimes, but in the end they make the world a bigger better place.

definitely. since graduating college, i've been continuously shedding the notion that everything has a clear answer. particularly in christian culture... the ideas and rules we fashion to make things easier, often do more harm than good. not to mention they're inaccurate...

btw all, to be clear, this song is very tongue-in-cheek.

Oh yeah. I've been loving this song. Was actually thinking about posting some of my own Derek Webb love recently.

My favorite parts are:

don’t teach me how to live like a free man
just give me a new law

and

what’s the use in trading a law you can never keep
for one you can that cannot get you anything...

and, of course, the "do not be afraid" part kills me everytime.

I still maintain that I See Things Upside Down probably has the best individual songs, but it's kind of nice to see him going back to the concept album. He does it quite well.

The whole album is good stuff, but this song is my current favorite.
