Hey Mdog, ther is a genre of music I think you would like. Its called alternative country. Fans call it Alt Country. Anyway its very folky and sounds a little bit up your alley. Uncle Tupalov is the only band I can think of off the top of my head.
That's funnier today, for some reason. Also, SE Engine in the past has been labeled "Alt Country."
