out

okay, i've run out of potato-related posts. not sure if you should be disappointed or relieved.

also, i'll be out this week. i'm doubting there will be a terribly large amount of wifi in my parents' neighborhood, but you never know. tonight will be spent with kt, and tomorrow will be spent SHOPPING and meeting up with tb... somewhere. and the rest of the week will be spent tooling around nw ohio and surviving family.

happy thanksgiving if i don't see/speak/chat with you before then!

couch potato

forget television; laptop laziness is the new theme around here.

unfortunately, my furniture, electrical outlets, and general apartment layout are all conspiring against me in regards to finding a practical place to park the new distraction. the perfect outlet is, of course, wired to the light switch which controls my main lamp in the living room. so unless i want to leave my lights on all day [no], or start turning the lamp on and off manually [no!], that's out. for now i'll just let it charge through the outlet on the other side of the room and pray i don't trip over the power cord on the way to the kitchen one of these groggy mornings and drag the whole thing crashing down from the coffee table.

laptop bag has been ordered and i am certain that it will arrive next monday, after i am out of town for the week. come on, united parcel service, i dare you to surprise me! i'd like this before i take my little vacation!

reminder

working on federal holidays is just another sporadic reminder of why i do not like this job.

trying to find parking is my daily reminder.

of course, today wasn't a problem.

redemption

oh God, let me back in
[from southeast engine's a wheel within a wheel, 2007]

if i return would you take me back
teach me to learn to face the facts
i'm so sorry for all i did
oh God let me back in

when i was a child i believed in you
what a simple thing for a child to do
i could see the sky and my mind was set
i could feel ok when i was so upset
but as i grew it was so easy to forget
oh God let me back in

cause i've taken for granted all that you gave
i threw away what i was supposed to save
so if you would erase my debt
let me appreciate what i got left
let me be here in the moment
oh God let me back in

cause i've been so selfish autonomous and cruel
i've done whatever i've wanted to
so if you would forgive my sin
i won't be who i have been
i'll put my stock in you not them
if you let me back in

and for so long now i've just laughed and yawned
but i sawed off the branch that i was resting on
and as i fell from limb to limb
i found i was no real exception
so here i'm begging for redemption
oh God let me back in
oh God let me back in

i bought southeast engine's latest release, a wheel within a wheel, at their baker theater show on saturday. i'm finding this track more worshipful than many of the 'christian' songs i've sung lately. theologically deep? maybe not. but it's honest and it's simple; it doesn't try too hard. it captures the raw emotion of realizing our own fallenness. while we may not technically have been kicked out... there are times we feel the need to be let back in. i listen to this song and i can't help but think of bonhoeffer and of the beautiful brutality of true sorrow and repentance.

begging for redemption... aren't we all.

connecting

so as you have gathered, i made it back from my reunion. i think maybe thirty or thirty-five actual classmates were there, and of course spouses and significant others filled out the crowd. it was not a spectacular event, but i am glad i went, if for no other reason than to be able to say i have now procured beer from a keg. i know what you're thinking, but what can i say? i was a real stick in the mud during my college days. as i'm sure a few of you could confirm.

there was mingling, and then there was eating, and then there was more mingling. the mingling redux actually consisted of one third of the crowd browsing through sheets of individual updates, binders of old high school newspapers, and a complete archive of yearbooks starting in KINDERGARTEN. [if you're confused: we have a small school system. one elementary, one middle school, one high school. and i wouldn't have it any other way]. the other two thirds of the crowd was crowded around the keg in the back, talking and watching the osu-penn game. so for a few hours i was able to catch up with a few people i hadn't seen for awhile -- some for the full ten years -- and had some good conversations. all in all it was kind of a surreal experience to see some of these people again. and, yeah, i'll probably go to the twenty year reunion too. i blame it more on thoroughness than excitement.

in other news on connecting, i finally bit the bullet and bought a laptop, which i have been tinkering with all week. next on the list: wireless router. anyone got a spare?

the more things change

apparently in second grade i had been voted Most Likely To Write The Great American Novel. hmmmmm.

also, in male/female split categories senior year, i was voted both Funniest and Most Sarcastic.

okay, so maybe some things DO stay the same.

interactive

so, i'm not quite as neurotic as this entry will make me seem, but i figured this would be entertaining enough to post. i'm going to my ten year reunion on saturday and just what the hell do you wear to a ten year reunion? i cannot possibly convey my much improved wardrobe, nor my much improved general awesomeness since 1997 in one evening. at worst, i would like to at least not look like a schmuck. this is my goal. so, readers. welcome to my over-planning world.

notes on the event: saturday, 6-12pm. forecast: 50°F and clear. [read: brrrrr!]. i grew up in a small rural town [read: not fancy]. graduating class of about one hundred [read: no strangers]. it's at the american legion hall [read: again, not fancy].

opinions? please don't ask me why i look so angry in the last three because i don't know. my look serious and/or unaffected expressions often end up as man, what's HER problem? le sigh. i think mostly it was a combination of wondering when the timer was going off, and getting tired of resetting the camera for every shot. and my camera is conveniently not flat on any surface except for the very bottom, which gives the last shots a nice tilted effect, no?

this seems obvious, but click for larger views.

i also know the pictures don't match up top to bottom but honestly don't you think i've already spent far too much time on this already?

the polls are open!
